Taipei, April 10 (CNA) A man working in a storm drain pipe was swept away and multiple incidents of flooding were reported Thursday morning following heavy rain in parts of northern Taiwan.
The Taoyuan Fire Department said it received a report at 10:21 a.m. about a man working in a stormwater drainage pipe who had been swept away when the pipe was inundated by rainwater.
Firefighters were dispatched to the scene, at the intersection of Taode Road and Yongfu West Street in the city’s Taoyuan District, but had yet to find the man as of early Thursday afternoon.
Meanwhile, a video shared on Threads Thursday morning showed heavy rain flooding through the open doors of an MRT train at Danshui Station, where commuters had to lift up their legs as water accumulated on the floor of the train.
The poster, a man surnamed Wang (王), said it was the first time he had seen such a thing in over 20 years riding the MRT.
Taiwan Railway Corp. said train traffic in both directions between Neili and Fugang stations in Taoyuan was suspended for two hours Thursday morning due to flooding on the tracks.
The suspension, which lasted from 9:52 a.m. to 11:53 a.m., delayed 5,210 passengers on 23 trains, the railway operator said, adding that it had offered shuttle bus services and ticket refunds for those affected.
Through 3:30 p.m., over 100 millimeters of rain had fallen in parts of Taoyuan City, Hsinchu County and New Taipei City, according to data from the Central Weather Administration.
