Taiwanese fugitive arrested amid Trump’s immigration crackdown

Los Angeles, Feb. 6 (CNA) A Taiwanese fugitive was arrested Monday by the Los Angeles Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) with assistance from Taiwan police, authorities said.

A social media post by the DEA’s Los Angeles office on Monday said the man was wanted in Taiwan for a DUI offense that killed two people, as well as for sexually assaulting a minor, citing information from Taiwan police.

Yang Lee-ching (楊力靜), a liaison officer at Taiwan’s Criminal Investigation Bureau on the U.S. West Coast, told CNA she has worked closely with various law enforcement agencies during her two and a half years in the role.

The fugitive surnamed Tsai (蔡) was apprehended with the help of information provided by the office. He is expected to be deported to Taiwan in the coming weeks.

As President Donald Trump implements a broader immigration enforcement policy, more fugitives could be arrested through expanded cooperation between federal agencies, Yang said.

Previously, during Joe Biden’s presidency, the apprehension of undocumented immigrants with criminal records was carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

However, under Trump, agencies including the DEA, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice are also involved.
