Taipei, April 29 (CNA) A man from Vietnam has died after the truck he was driving was apparently rear-ended by a trailer truck on a section of freeway in Changhua County early Tuesday, according to police.
The truck, which had stopped in the outer lane on National Freeway No. 1 for reasons as yet undetermined, crashed into the inner lane after being struck from behind, police said, but provided no details about the trailer truck.
A driver was found inside the overturned truck and rushed to hospital, only to be pronounced dead at Show Chwan Memorial Hospital after efforts to resuscitate him failed, police said.
The deceased was later identified by his last name Nguyen, a 26-year-old Vietnamese national who was studying mechanical engineering at Chienkuo Technology University (CTU).
According to the National Highway Police Bureau, the cause of the accident is being investigated.
Separately on Tuesday, CTU told reporters that Nguyen was a sophomore and last seen in school the previous day.
Asked whether he had been allowed to work while studying in Taiwan, the Changhua-based university said Nguyen possessed a legal work permit and also had a valid truck driving license.
His family in Vietnam have been notified of the incident, it said, adding that an autopsy will be carried out on Wednesday.
