Sporadic showers in northern Taiwan Friday as weather stays warm

by Focus Taiwan

Taipei, April 18 (CNA) There will be slightly greater cloud cover over Taiwan on Friday that will bring brief, isolated showers in the north in the morning, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) has forecast.

Sporadic thundershowers could emerge in northern Taiwan and mountainous areas around the rest of the island during the afternoon, the CWA said.

The weather will remain warm Friday, with daytime highs ranging between 28 to 32 degrees Celsius across Taiwan and the lows ranging from 20 to 23 degrees, according to the CWA.

The agency also cautioned that the Taiwan-controlled islands of Kinmen and Matsu near China’s eastern coast could see localized fog or low clouds, which could affect visibility and potentially air travel.

Meanwhile, the CWA released strong wind advisories for Taoyuan, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Taitung County, and the Matsu Islands (Lienchiang County), effective until Friday night.

With stronger southwesterly winds, sustained winds reaching 28-36 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching 62-75 kph could be seen in parts of Green Island off Taitung, Hsinchu City, and Hsinchu County, starting Friday afternoon, the CWA forecast.

As the cloud system from southern China moves eastward, temperatures in northern Taiwan could start to slip as the weather turns unstable later Friday, said independent meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮), an adjunct associate professor at National Central University.

With the front approaching, rain will be expected all across Taiwan on Saturday, Wu said, and it will stay that way until next Monday and Tuesday.

He said temperatures would likely rise to their highest so far this year on Tuesday, with most areas in Taiwan set to record temperatures of 35 degrees or higher.
