Taipei, March 15 (CNA) Temperatures in northern areas of Taiwan will drop Sunday with the arrival of a cold air mass that will last through Thursday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said Saturday.

On Saturday night, the mercury was expected to hover around 15-16 degrees Celsius in the north, 17-20 degrees in central and southern Taiwan, and 21-22 degrees in the east, according to the CWA.

With the arrival of the cold air mass, temperatures on Sunday and Monday will range from 10-18 degrees in northern Taiwan, 12-20 degrees in the central region, 14-24 degrees in the south, and 14-23 degrees in the east, the CWA said.

It has issued cold surge advisories, effective Sunday evening into the night, for Sanzhi District in New Taipei and mountainous areas in Hsinchu and Miaoli counties, warning of temperatures below 10 degrees.

There is also a chance of snowfall at elevations of over 3,000 meters in the mountains of central and northern Taiwan on Sunday and Monday, the CWA said.

From Tuesday to Thursday, the weather will remain chilly in northern regions, the CWA said. While central and southern Taiwan will see warmer daytime temperatures, the mercury will drop sharply by at least 10 degrees at night, it added.

Temperatures will rebound Friday, but there will still be a significant gap in the daytime and nighttime temperatures in western Taiwan, the CWA said.

Meanwhile, sporadic showers are likely across most of Taiwan on Sunday, with cloudy skies prevailing in some areas, the CWA said.

On Monday, occasional showers can be expected in eastern Taiwan and in mountainous areas in the west, while other regions will be cloudy to sunny, according to the CWA.

From Tuesday into Thursday, Hualien and Taitung counties will see sporadic showers, but most other parts of Taiwan will be sunny to cloudy, the weather agency said.
